Sarah Caron: I remember…

Michel Puech publie dans La lettre de la photographie, lettre quotidienne en français et en anglais.

The André Villers Photography Museum of Mougins, in the hills behind Cannes on the Côte d’Azur, is organizing the first retrospective of Sarah Caron a young reporter whose work is published in the world’s great magazines.

It is hard to imagine Sarah Caron, a thin, discreet, brown haired young woman, in the risky war zones of Afghanistan or Pakistan. However, since 1994, she has been traveling the world. Among the countries she has covered, are Chili, Cameroon, Gaza, Cuba, Haiti, the United States, Cambodia, India, , Myanmar, Indonesia . After every trip, her pictures appear in daily’s or magazines.

While working on a news story, she would take her other pictures of the events, the countries, the societies she visited with her “own Vision”. This vision, in addition to its timidity and respect, has a particular lighting she describe at length. Once when we met, she explained with great precision how she controls the lighting, either using available light or providing easy to carry artificial lights she always has readily available.

The Mougins exhibition is divided in three parts: A Fragile world, A land of Pure, In the Night for love and covers 15 years of work: widows in India, the recent catastrophe in Haiti, society in Pakistan, religous festival in Cuba. Other stories including homosexuality, transvestites or the lives of fighters in Palestinian refugee camps are also on show.

More informations about her can be found in the essential book Le Pakistan à Vif published by Jean-Claude Gawsewitch (October 2010) and the accompanying article I wrote in La Lettre:
